Topaz Solar Farms is the sixth-largest solar farm in the United States and held the title of largest solar farm in the world when constructed. It remains the gold standard for sustainable operations and integration with local rare vegetation and protected wildlife. Topaz generates electricity with no emissions, no waste and minimal water use, boasting the smallest carbon footprint of any photovoltaic (PV) technology at its installation in 2014.
Developed in collaboration with local, state and federal agencies, as well as environmental groups, Topaz aims to minimize and mitigate environmental impacts. Various methods, including grazing sheep, are employed to manage vegetation responsibly and preserve habitats. Daily monitoring and protective measures safeguard the San Joaquin kit fox, a federally endangered species. The project also preserves wildlife movement corridors, supporting the migration of pronghorn antelope and tule elk, and protects the microscopic fairy shrimp that emerge in vernal pools during the rainy seasons.
Generation from this project is sold to Pacific Gas & Electric Company under a long-term power purchase agreement.
