Harnessing Wind for Clean Energy
Wind is one of America’s most abundant and cost-effective sources of electricity for homes and businesses and the largest source of sustainable energy in the U.S. Wind is reliable, inexhaustible and can be harnessed almost anywhere.
BHE Renewables has over 2,500 megawatts of total wind fleet capacity across 13 projects in Texas, Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, California and Kansas. Our partial ownership of 36 additional wind projects spans seven states.

How Does Wind Energy Work?
When the wind blows, it turns massive turbine blades, which is converted into AC power through a generator, and is transmitted via cables to the power grid where the electricity is delivered to customers.
Powering Homes and the Economy
According to the American Clean Power Association, wind turbines represent enough generation capacity to power the equivalent of over 46 million homes across the U.S. This makes wind-powered energy the fourth-largest source of domestic electricity. U.S.-generated wind energy prevented 351 million metric tons of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere in 2024 – that’s equivalent to the CO2 emissions from 61 million gasoline powered cars!
BHE Renewables owns and operates wind farms in four of the top states for wind energy production – Texas, Iowa, Illinois and Kansas.
Protecting Wildlife with Environmental Respect
Protecting environmentally sensitive species, such as birds and bats, and understanding potential impacts on migratory routes are an important part of research and conservation at our wind farms. Our yearslong engagements with agencies and organizations, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Wind Energy Condor Action Team, enable us to implement and enhance ongoing conservation plans.
